Chennai's Manali Bus Terminal Demolished for Modern Two-Storey Facility
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has initiated demolition work at the Manali bus terminal, marking the first step toward constructing a contemporary two-storey facility. This ambitious redevelopment project is designed to significantly upgrade passenger amenities, featuring new shops and enhanced waiting areas to improve the overall commuter experience.
Project Aims to Enhance Commuter Comfort and Efficiency
Officials have stated that the primary objectives of the redevelopment are to boost commuter comfort, streamline bus movement operations, and effectively address the increasing passenger demand in north Chennai. The modern bus terminal is being developed under the 'Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam' initiative and is specifically engineered to manage higher volumes of passenger traffic efficiently.
Comprehensive Amenities and Safety Features
The new facility will include six bus bays, parking space for 48 two-wheelers, a dedicated feeding room, separate toilet facilities for passengers and staff, and a room for drivers and conductors. Manali zonal officer K Devendiran emphasized that the project is expected to be completed within a six-month timeframe. The revamped terminal will also incorporate CCTV cameras and a police booth to ensure passenger safety, features that are currently absent in the existing terminal.
Temporary Arrangements and Strategic Design
To ensure the continuous operation of MTC buses without causing inconvenience to passengers, a temporary bus terminal has been established near the existing site. This decision was made because shifting the terminal to another area was deemed unnecessary, as only 10 MTC buses are typically on standby at the terminal. A consultant involved in the project explained that the layout has been meticulously designed to prioritize passenger comfort during waiting periods.
Additional commercial and infrastructure elements include:
- Nine shops to be constructed on the first and second floors, which will be rented out by the corporation. These will encompass retail shops, a photocopy shop, and an ATM.
- A stormwater drain will be built as part of the project to prevent waterlogging during the monsoon season, addressing a common civic issue.
Community Support and Future Expectations
Local residents have warmly welcomed the bus terminal redevelopment project, which has been a long-standing demand in the community. T K Shanmugam of the Federation of North Chennai Residents' Welfare Association expressed optimism, stating that the modernized terminal will greatly benefit passengers. He also urged authorities to ensure proper maintenance, prevent vendor encroachments inside the terminal, and complete the project within the stipulated timeframe to maximize its positive impact on the area.
