Chandigarh Announces 48-Hour Water Supply Shutdown for Essential Pipeline Maintenance

The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has declared a significant 48-hour water supply disruption affecting residents across the city. This essential shutdown is scheduled to commence on January 30, 2026, and will continue through January 31, 2026. The decision comes as part of urgent repair and replacement operations on the critical PSC pipeline (Phase-III) located at Sukho Majra village in Punjab along the Sirhind–Morinda Road.

Critical Infrastructure Work Necessitates Temporary Suspension

During this planned maintenance period, the pumping of raw water from Phase-III (Kajauli) to the Water Works facility in Sector 39, Chandigarh will be completely suspended. The municipal authorities are undertaking this work to replace the existing pipeline with a new spiral-welded MS pipeline, which represents a crucial upgrade to the city's water infrastructure system.

The Municipal Corporation has formally requested all residents to make necessary arrangements in advance to manage their water requirements during this temporary disruption. Officials have emphasized the importance of public cooperation during this period of essential maintenance work that aims to improve long-term water supply reliability for the city.

Detailed Water Supply Schedule During Maintenance Period

To minimize inconvenience while ensuring equitable distribution, the Municipal Corporation has established a regulated water supply schedule for the affected dates:

  • January 30, 2026
    • Morning Supply: 3:30 AM to 9:00 AM — Full Pressure
    • Evening Supply: 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM — Low Pressure
  • January 31, 2026
    • Morning Supply: 3:30 AM to 9:00 AM — Full Pressure
    • Evening Supply: 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM — Low Pressure

This carefully planned schedule ensures that residents will receive water during peak usage hours, though with varying pressure levels as indicated. The morning supply periods will operate at full pressure to accommodate essential morning activities, while evening supplies will be available at reduced pressure to maintain basic water access throughout the city.

The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has assured residents that this temporary disruption is necessary for implementing vital infrastructure improvements that will enhance the overall efficiency and reliability of the city's water distribution network in the long term.
