Chandigarh Administration Unveils Major Development Projects on Republic Day
The Chandigarh administration has announced ambitious plans to transform the city's cultural and urban landscape, with a state-of-the-art concert centre taking centre stage. The announcement came during the Republic Day celebrations, where significant progress on slum eradication and green mobility initiatives was also highlighted.
Landmark Concert Centre to Boost Cultural Infrastructure
During his Republic Day address at the Parade Ground in Sector 19, UT Chief Secretary H Rajesh Prasad revealed plans to develop a modern concert centre on 25 acres of land in Sarangpur. This landmark project aims to create world-class infrastructure capable of hosting national and international events while fostering cultural exchange within the region.
"This project represents a significant investment in Chandigarh's cultural future," Prasad stated during his speech. "It will provide a dedicated space for artistic performances and cultural gatherings that meet international standards."
Chandigarh Declared Slum-Free After Major Urban Renewal
In a major urban development milestone, Chief Secretary Prasad announced that Chandigarh has achieved slum-free status through a comprehensive rehabilitation and reclamation initiative. The administration has successfully removed unauthorized colonies from government land following due process and large-scale rehabilitation efforts.
Over several years, the administration has reclaimed approximately 520 acres of government land valued at about Rs 21,000 crore. This achievement has provided thousands of residents with improved housing and living conditions while creating a model of urban renewal that other cities can emulate.
"Chandigarh's slum eradication initiative demonstrates how urban development can be both transformative and inclusive," Prasad emphasized. "We have not just cleared land but have provided better alternatives for residents while reclaiming valuable urban space."
Green Urban Mobility Initiative Takes Shape
The administration is making significant strides in sustainable transportation through the Green Urban Mobility initiative. Approval has been granted for 428 electric buses under the Pradhan Mantri E-Bus Sewa Scheme, which will replace diesel buses across the Tri-City region.
Infrastructure development is progressing with agreements signed for the first batch of 100 e-buses, of which 15 have already been delivered. Supporting facilities including 66 kV charging substations, modern depots, and upgraded workshops are currently under development to support this green transition.
Republic Day Celebrations and Additional Announcements
The 77th Republic Day was celebrated at the Sector 17 Parade Ground with Chief Secretary Prasad serving as the chief guest. The ceremony included traditional elements such as the hoisting of the national flag, inspection of the Guard of Honour, and a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial in Bougainvillea Garden to honour fallen armed forces personnel.
In another significant announcement, Prasad revealed that 37 government schools in Chandigarh have achieved energy-surplus status and now register negative electricity bills. This achievement reflects the administration's commitment to sustainable practices across multiple sectors.
The combination of cultural infrastructure development, urban renewal achievements, and green mobility initiatives positions Chandigarh as a model city for balanced urban development that addresses cultural, social, and environmental priorities simultaneously.
