Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has clarified that disclosing caste is not mandatory for beneficiaries of the Gruha Jyothi scheme. The clarification comes amid concerns and confusion among applicants regarding the data collection process under the scheme, which provides free electricity to eligible households.
Helpline for Queries
Bescom has also set up a dedicated helpline to address queries about data collection and verification under the scheme. The helpline aims to assist applicants with any issues or doubts they may have regarding the application process, especially concerning personal information.
Scheme Details
The Gruha Jyothi scheme, launched by the Karnataka government, offers free electricity to households that consume up to 200 units per month. Beneficiaries are required to register and provide certain details for verification. However, Bescom has emphasized that caste information is not a prerequisite for availing the benefits.
According to a Bescom official, “Caste is not a required field for the Gruha Jyothi scheme. Beneficiaries should not feel compelled to disclose this information. Our helpline is available to clarify any such concerns.”
Data Privacy Assurance
Bescom has assured that all data collected will be handled confidentially and used solely for the purpose of implementing the scheme. The utility has urged applicants to report any unauthorized requests for caste or other sensitive information.
The clarification follows reports of some applicants being asked to provide caste details during the registration process. Bescom has instructed its staff to adhere strictly to the guidelines and not demand any unnecessary information.
