A Chennai resident has filed a petition with civic authorities, alleging that the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) constructed a bus stand that completely obstructs the entrance to his land parcel in Kolathur. The bus stand, he claims, has made it impossible for him to proceed with constructing a house on the property.
Landowner's Grievance
N V Charry Babu, the owner of a plot located in Poompuhar Nagar, stated that the corporation authorities informed him that the bus shelter was built in 2019, at a time when the land was registered under a different individual's name. The property was subsequently transferred to Babu's name in 2023.
Initially, Babu assumed the structure was temporary and had no immediate plans to build on the plot. However, when he decided to start construction in December 2025, the shelter became a major obstruction. Despite raising a complaint with the GCC, he has not received a proper response.
When Babu approached zonal-level officials, they reportedly gave a lethargic response, stating that a small space had been left for entry into the property and that he should make use of it.
Official Response and Legal Perspective
Though the GCC constructed the bus shelter, officials have now issued what the landowner describes as a mere formality letter. The letter states that the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) must provide a no-objection certificate (NOC) before the structure can be relocated.
Advocate Venugopal, commenting on the matter, said that since the GCC built the shelter and acknowledged that it obstructs the landowner's proposed construction, the corporation should directly initiate the relocation process rather than shifting responsibility to the MTC.
Despite multiple attempts by the Times of India to seek comments, GCC officials were unavailable for comment.
