The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday removed extended constructions and unauthorized covering of mandatory open spaces at four hotels in Andheri (West). The action followed a directive from BMC additional commissioner Ashwini Joshi, who emphasized that strict measures would be taken against hotels using compulsory open space for service areas and illegally covering them.
Operation Details
The BMC's K-West ward carried out the demolition drive in the Veera Desai Marg and New Link Road area. A joint team comprising the health, license, fire, and building and factory departments executed the operation. During the drive, authorities seized 24 chairs, one cooking range, a microwave oven, three coolers, an electric fryer, and two speakers. A total of 20 personnel, including ward officers, employees, laborers, and fire brigade staff, were deployed.
Official Statement
Ward officer Chakrapani Alle stated that hotel operators had illegally covered the Compulsory Open Space (COS) and expanded the service area. The BMC reiterated its commitment to enforcing building bylaws and ensuring compliance with urban development regulations.
This action is part of a broader crackdown on unauthorized constructions in Mumbai, particularly targeting commercial establishments that violate open space norms. The BMC has warned of similar actions against other violators in the future.
