Bhubaneswar: In a special clean-up drive, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated the removal of dangling wires and DTH cables that pose safety risks and are an eyesore. BMC officials stated that three dedicated squads have been deployed to carry out the operation, ensuring the safety of commuters.
Details of the Drive
The drive, which commenced on Wednesday, is scheduled to run for a week to clear all dangling cables. Any remaining cables will be addressed later in a phased manner. BMC Deputy Commissioner Ajay Mohanty expressed optimism that most dangerously low-hanging cables will be removed during this period. Additionally, the height of some dangling wires will be raised to prevent hazards.
Safety Measures and Enforcement
BMC officials reported that ladders are being used to fix the wires, and personnel involved in the task have been provided with safety kits. Enforcement squads will support the work of the electrical wing. Separate teams are working to remove cluttered wires. Where possible, poles with numerous cables are being covered to improve aesthetics.
Regarding network disruptions, a BMC officer clarified that private agencies are responsible for any disturbances in their networks. The officer stated, "We will not be responsible for their network problems. They should have taken ample care instead of installing cables in a cluttered and reckless manner."
Removal of Illegal Hoardings
In addition to cable removal, the civic body is also taking down illegal and unapproved hoardings from prominent locations. This initiative aims to restore the city's aesthetic appeal and ensure safety, as such hoardings can pose risks during rain. Previously, the BMC decided that no hoarding, big or small, would be allowed along the right of way, including motorable roads, footpaths, and parking areas.
The comprehensive clean-up drive reflects the BMC's commitment to enhancing urban safety and visual cleanliness in Bhubaneswar.
