BJP Corporator Calls for Urgent Redevelopment of Nariman Point Fire Station

Mumbai: BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar has formally appealed to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to expedite the redevelopment of the Nariman Point fire station, emphasizing that the current G+1 structure is in a severely dilapidated condition. In a letter addressed to Maharashtra Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal, BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, and Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, the corporator highlighted that the redevelopment of the fire station was previously discussed in a meeting held on January 7.

“During the meeting, the redevelopment of the fire station located on a 3,500-square-metre plot was deliberated, and the BMC was instructed to formulate a redevelopment plan. Unfortunately, no progress has been made on this issue since then,” stated Narwekar. He stressed the critical importance of the fire station, given the increasing population in the surrounding area and the presence of key government establishments such as Vidhan Bhavan and Mantralaya.

The entire plot is under the possession of BMC and is reserved for Fire Brigade purposes. However, the premises fall under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) as per the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) 2019, which adds a layer of regulatory complexity. “Considering the strategic importance of this fire station and the urgent need to upgrade its facilities, prompt action is necessary,” Narwekar added. The corporator’s appeal underscores the urgency of modernizing the fire station to ensure it can effectively serve the area’s growing population and safeguard vital government infrastructure.
