In a significant move to address the persistent traffic congestion plaguing Bengaluru, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has proposed the construction of an 800-metre-long flyover near Iblur Junction on the Outer Ring Road. This initiative is part of a broader, comprehensive plan to overhaul the entire stretch from Silk Board Junction to KR Puram, aiming to ensure smoother traffic flow and reduce commute times for the city's residents.
Comprehensive Development Plan for Outer Ring Road
GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao, during a joint inspection with officials from various agencies including Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-SMILE), Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), and the East and South City Corporations, emphasized the need for a holistic approach. He instructed officials to prepare a detailed blueprint for the flyover, incorporating modern technology to expedite construction within a short timeframe.
Key Instructions and Proposals
Rao directed officials to submit a comprehensive plan outlining the estimated cost, construction model, and completion timeline for the flyover. Experts have identified that an approximately 800-metre flyover is essential at Iblur Junction to effectively decongest the area. Additionally, Rao stressed the importance of coordinated efforts with the South City Corporation and BMRCL for the integrated development of Silk Board Junction.
This includes the installation of High-Rise Precast Concrete (HRPC) elements, implementation of flood-prevention measures, and other related works. With Metro pile cap works currently underway at the junction, Rao urged officials to complete these swiftly without causing further inconvenience to vehicular traffic.
Addressing Infrastructure Challenges
The GBA chief commissioner highlighted several ongoing issues that need immediate attention. He noted that roads beneath Metro stations along the Outer Ring Road are uneven, and the ongoing pile cap works have gradually reduced road width, potentially exacerbating congestion. Rao directed officials to inspect all Metro stations along the corridor and rectify any identified issues promptly.
During an inspection near Iblur Metro Station towards Silk Board Junction, officials observed poor maintenance and incomplete work along a 2-km stretch of footpath. Rao instructed them to develop and complete these footpaths to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility.
Broader Traffic Management Initiatives
Rao revealed that a broader plan is being prepared to ease congestion by developing the Outer Ring Road comprehensively, including service roads and footpaths. As Metro-related footpath and median works are already in progress, he instructed BMRCL and B-SMILE to coordinate closely and finalize the detailed project report (DPR) to avoid duplication of work and ensure efficient resource utilization.
Furthermore, Rao directed officials from the City Corporation and Traffic Police to jointly inspect the Outer Ring Road and submit a list of required pedestrian skywalks, along with design details and estimated funding requirements. He also emphasized the need to widen the area and construct footpaths near Kodibisanahalli Metro Station, close to the Marathahalli Police Station, where a narrow stormwater drain is impeding smooth vehicular movement.
All Metro-related works are to be carried out in coordination with B-SMILE and in strict adherence to the approved comprehensive development plan, ensuring a seamless integration of infrastructure projects.
