Telangana Panchayat Polls Phase-III: 11 Sarpanch, 100 Ward Seats Get Zero Nominations
Telangana Panchayat Polls: 111 Seats See No Nomination

The third phase of the Telangana panchayat elections has revealed a significant lack of participation in several areas, with over a hundred positions failing to attract a single candidate. Official data indicates that a total of 111 seats, including key leadership roles, received no nominations at all, highlighting uneven electoral engagement across the state's rural bodies.

Sarpanch Posts Remain Uncontested in Multiple Districts

According to information accessed, the election process for 4,158 gram panchayats was notified for this phase. However, in a notable development, the crucial sarpanch post did not receive a single nomination in 11 panchayats. These panchayats are spread across five different districts, pointing to localized issues rather than a state-wide trend.

The district of Nagarkurnool was the most affected, accounting for six of these vacant sarpanch positions. Komaram Bheem Asifabad district followed with two panchayats, while Adilabad, Khammam, and Mahabubnagar districts each reported one panchayat without a candidate for the top post.

Widespread Vacancies in Ward Member Positions

The gap in participation was even more pronounced for ward member seats. Data shows that 100 ward member positions across various districts registered no candidates. This large number underscores a deeper level of disengagement or potential local challenges in the electoral process at the grassroots level.

Once again, Nagarkurnool district emerged with the highest number, recording a staggering 44 wards without nominees. It was followed by Kamareddy with 12 vacant wards and Khammam with 9. The issue was not confined to these districts alone. A broader list of regions, including Adilabad, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mahabubabad, Mahabubnagar, Mancherial, Medak, Mulugu, Nalgonda, Nirmal, Peddapalli, Ranga Reddy, and Siddipet, also reported at least one ward where no nomination was filed.

Commission Data Points to Uneven Electoral Participation

The statistics released by the State Election Commission paint a clear picture of uneven participation across districts in this ongoing phase of the panchayat polls. Certain pockets, particularly Nagarkurnool, have shown significant gaps in candidate filings. This lack of nominations raises questions about the underlying causes, which could range from political consensus and uncontested wins in some areas to potential disillusionment, lack of awareness, or local conflicts in others.

The absence of candidates for 111 local governance seats is a development that could impact the administration and development works in these specific villages until the positions are filled through subsequent processes or by-elections. It highlights the challenges in ensuring contested elections at every level of the democratic framework, even in a large-scale exercise like the panchayat polls.
