Puducherry Achieves Record-Breaking Voter Turnout in Assembly Elections
The Union territory of Puducherry witnessed an extraordinary display of democratic participation on Thursday, as citizens from all four regions—Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam—flocked to polling stations in massive numbers. By 5 PM, the territory had recorded a remarkable 86% voter turnout, setting a new benchmark in its electoral history. This figure is expected to rise further as election officials finalize the data after processing all votes cast before the 6 PM deadline.
Historic Turnout Surpasses Decades of Polling Data
This election has already secured the highest voter turnout in an assembly poll since Puducherry's inaugural election in 1964. To put this achievement into perspective, previous elections saw turnouts of 82.2% in 2021, 84.03% in 2016, 85.52% in 2011, 85.46% in 2006, and 72.61% in 2001. The steady increase over the years culminated in this record-breaking participation, reflecting heightened civic engagement among residents.
Peaceful Polling with Isolated Incidents
Overall, the polling process was conducted peacefully across the territory. However, a minor altercation occurred near a booth at Thirukanur Government Higher Secondary School in the Mannadipet constituency. Tensions flared when Congress cadres questioned the presence of numerous BJP supporters near the polling station, allegedly canvassing for their party candidate. The verbal dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, prompting police to intervene with a mild lathicharge to disperse the clashing groups and restore order.
In the Mannadipet constituency, Home Minister A. Namassivayam is seeking re-election, while Congress has fielded former MLA T.P.R. Selvame. Other candidates include representatives from PMK, NTK, and TVK, making it a closely watched contest.
Technical Glitch and Innovative Measures
A brief disruption occurred at a polling booth in the Karaikal (South) constituency when a VVPAT machine emitted smoke due to an overheated battery. Election officials acted promptly, using a fire extinguisher to douse the smoke and replacing the faulty battery, allowing polling to resume within 10 minutes.
In a novel initiative, voters at the model polling centre set up at VOC Government Higher Secondary School were greeted by a robot that handed out roses and guided them to queues. This technological touch added a unique element to the voting experience.
Prominent Figures Cast Their Votes
Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, founder of the All India NR Congress (AINRC), continued his tradition by riding his Yamaha RX 100 motorcycle to a polling station in Thilaspet to cast his vote. Prior to voting, he performed a pooja at the Appa Paithiyasami temple and sought blessings from his spiritual guru. Rangasamy expressed confidence that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would form the government for a second consecutive term.
Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan, along with his wife and mother, exercised their franchise at a booth in the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare.
Political Landscape and Key Contests
The election features a direct contest between the AINRC-led National Democratic Alliance and the Congress-led INDIA bloc. AINRC is contesting in 16 constituencies, with its allies—BJP in 10, and AIADMK and LJK in two each. On the other side, Congress is contesting in 16 constituencies, supported by DMK in 13 and VCK in one.
Puducherry comprises 30 assembly constituencies: 23 in Puducherry, five in Karaikal, and one each in Mahe and Yanam. In the 2021 assembly polls, AINRC won 10 seats and BJP secured 6, forming a coalition government with a simple majority of 16. The opposition saw DMK win 6 seats and Congress 2, with a record six independents also elected.
Conclusion: A Landmark Day for Democracy
Puducherry's assembly elections have not only set a new standard for voter participation but also highlighted the territory's commitment to democratic processes. With innovative measures enhancing the voting experience and minor incidents swiftly managed, the day stands as a testament to robust electoral machinery and engaged citizenship. As results await, the historic turnout underscores the significance of this political moment for the Union territory.
