Mohali: Nearly 4.8 lakh voters are set to determine the outcome for 695 candidates in the municipal elections across Mohali district on Tuesday. Polling will take place from 8 am to 5 pm at 498 booths, with stringent security measures and CCTV surveillance in place.

Security and Counting Arrangements

The administration has established eight strong rooms to secure ballot boxes: two in Mohali city and one each in Banur, Derabassi, Zirakpur, Kharar, Lalru, and Kurali. Counting of votes is scheduled for May 29. District election officer and deputy commissioner Komal Mittal confirmed that polling parties have been dispatched to all booths.

Voter Demographics

The district electorate comprises 2,48,415 male voters, 2,32,340 female voters, and 26 voters in the ‘others’ category. A total of 66 booths have been identified as sensitive and 181 as hypersensitive, with additional security personnel deployed at these locations.

Ward-wise Breakdown

In MC Mohali, 227 candidates are contesting from 50 wards, with over 1.75 lakh voters set to vote at 184 booths. Zirakpur municipal council has 124 candidates from 31 wards, with polling at 128 booths. Derabassi MC features 79 candidates contesting 18 wards (one elected unopposed), with voting at 51 booths.

Nayagaon has 87 candidates from 21 wards across 51 booths. Lalru has 61 candidates for 16 wards (one unopposed) at 33 booths. Kurali sees 77 candidates contesting 17 wards, while Banur has 40 candidates across 13 wards, with polling at 33 and 18 booths, respectively.

Administrative Measures

Mittal reviewed dispatch arrangements at the School of Eminence, Phase 3B1, and emphasized that CCTV monitoring has been ensured at all polling booths. She urged voters, especially senior citizens, to vote early to avoid the heat, noting that shade and drinking water facilities are available at all polling stations.

The deputy commissioner stated that all measures have been taken to ensure free, fair, and peaceful polling. She appealed to candidates to strictly adhere to Election Commission guidelines for the smooth conduct of elections.
