Prime Minister Narendra Modi transformed Guwahati into a vibrant sea of saffron on Saturday evening, marking a significant political moment in the run-up to next year's assembly elections in Assam. The Prime Minister led a massive 3.8-kilometer roadshow before convening a high-stakes strategy session with the state's top party leadership.
A Spectacular Roadshow Through Guwahati
The energetic procession began outside the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex on National Highway-27. Thousands of enthusiastic supporters lined the route, waving flags and chanting slogans, eager to catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister. The roadshow culminated at the Vajpayee Bhavan in Basistha, which serves as the BJP's state headquarters.
This visit marked PM Modi's first to the party headquarters since its inauguration in October 2022 by BJP president JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He was flanked by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP president Dilip Saikia throughout the journey, symbolizing a united front.
Closed-Door Strategy Session with 280 Leaders
Inside Vajpayee Bhavan, the Prime Minister chaired a crucial closed-door meeting. The gathering included a powerful assembly of approximately 280 leaders, encompassing former state presidents, sitting MPs, ministers, and MLAs. The objective was clear: to fine-tune the party's electoral strategy and galvanize its cadre across Assam.
State BJP spokesperson Dewan Dhruba Jyoti Maral emphasized that the meeting was designed to sharpen the party's poll approach and energize workers at all levels. With Assam scheduled to vote early next year, Modi's direct engagement underscores the BJP's intent to secure the state vigorously.
Signaling Intent for the Northeast
Analysts view the Prime Minister's elaborate roadshow and his maiden visit to the state HQ as a strong signal. It highlights the BJP's strategy to consolidate its position in the northeast and use the region as a launchpad for its broader electoral ambitions. PM Modi's itinerary for Sunday further underscores the visit's significance. His day will begin by paying homage to the martyrs of Assam's anti-foreigners' movement at the Swahid Smarak Kshetra. Following this, he will interact with 25 students aboard a vessel on the Brahmaputra River for a "Pariksha Pe Charcha"-style session.
Later, the Prime Minister will fly to Dibrugarh to lay the foundation stone for a major brownfield ammonia-urea fertiliser plant at Namrup, valued at a staggering Rs 10,600 crore. This blend of political outreach, tribute to local sentiments, and focus on developmental projects encapsulates the BJP's multi-pronged campaign strategy for Assam.
