ECI Allots 'Cooker' Symbol to AMMK for Tamil Nadu Assembly Election
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially allotted the 'cooker' symbol to the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly election. This allocation is part of the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with AMMK set to field candidates in 11 constituencies.
Symbol Allocation Under Election Laws
The 'cooker' symbol has been allocated in accordance with the provisions of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968. This order governs the reservation and allotment of symbols to political parties and candidates during elections. The ECI has specified that the symbol can be used exclusively for the forthcoming Assembly election, ensuring its temporary assignment for this electoral cycle.
However, the Commission clarified that the 'cooker' will remain available as a free symbol for other candidates in constituencies where AMMK does not nominate any contestants. This provision allows for flexibility in symbol usage across different electoral districts, maintaining fairness in the electoral process.
Historical Context of the 'Cooker' Symbol
The 'cooker' symbol holds historical significance for AMMK and its leader, TTV Dhinakaran. Dhinakaran first received this symbol while contesting in the 2017 bypoll for the R K Nagar constituency. In that election, he emerged victorious, defeating candidates from both the AIADMK and the DMK, marking a notable political achievement.
Despite AMMK not being a recognised political party at the national level, it had previously been allotted the 'cooker' symbol for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. This repeated allocation underscores the symbol's association with the party and its electoral strategies in Tamil Nadu.
