Election Commission Intensifies Cash Seizure Efforts in Chennai Ahead of Assembly Polls
In a significant crackdown on electoral malpractices, the Election Commission of India has seized nearly Rs 3 lakh in unaccounted cash during rigorous vehicle checks across Chennai on Wednesday. The seized amount has been promptly deposited into the treasury, underscoring the commission's commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process.
Enforcement Drive Amid Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections
The action comes as part of intensified enforcement measures ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, scheduled for April 23. Adhering strictly to the Election Commission's standard operating procedures and the model code of conduct, authorities are targeting goods valued over Rs 10,000 without valid documentation and cash exceeding Rs 50,000 carried without proper proof. These items are liable for immediate seizure to prevent any undue influence on the electoral outcome.
Key Provisions for Seizure and Reclamation
According to the Election Commission's guidelines, individuals carrying cash above Rs 50,000 must provide valid proof of its source and intended use. Failure to do so results in seizure, but the amount can be reclaimed if proper documents are later produced before the appellate authority. This system aims to balance enforcement with fairness, allowing legitimate transactions while curbing illicit activities.
Deployment of Surveillance Teams Across Chennai
To monitor and enforce these regulations, the Election Commission has deployed 48 flying squads and 48 static surveillance teams across Chennai district. Each constituency is covered by three flying squads, ensuring comprehensive oversight. These teams operate in three shifts around the clock, vigilantly checking for violations and taking swift action to uphold electoral integrity.
Detailed Breakdown of Cash Seizures on Wednesday
- In Velachery constituency, flying squads seized Rs 55,400 during vehicle checks.
- Static surveillance teams confiscated Rs 51,000 in Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar.
- In Harbour constituency, static teams seized Rs 1,89,900, contributing significantly to the total.
The cumulative seizure from these operations amounted to Rs 2,96,300, highlighting the effectiveness of the coordinated efforts. This proactive approach is part of a broader strategy to deter the use of black money and other illegal means in the upcoming elections, ensuring a level playing field for all candidates and parties.
As the election date approaches, the Election Commission continues to ramp up its surveillance and enforcement activities, sending a clear message against electoral misconduct. Voters and stakeholders are urged to comply with the model code of conduct to facilitate a smooth and democratic voting process.
