The Election Commission of India has directed repolling in 15 polling stations across West Bengal on Saturday, citing reports of violence, intimidation, and irregularities during the first phase of voting. The affected polling stations are spread across several districts, including Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, and Bankura.
Reasons for Repolling
According to the EC, repolling was necessitated after incidents of booth capturing, damage to electronic voting machines, and voter intimidation were reported. In some areas, voters were prevented from casting their ballots, while in others, EVMs were allegedly tampered with. The commission has also ordered the suspension of several polling officials for dereliction of duty.
Districts Affected
- Purba Medinipur: 6 polling stations
- Paschim Medinipur: 4 polling stations
- Jhargram: 3 polling stations
- Bankura: 2 polling stations
Security Arrangements
The EC has deployed additional paramilitary forces to ensure peaceful polling during the repolling process. Strict security measures have been put in place to prevent any untoward incidents. The repolling will take place from 7 AM to 6 PM on Saturday.
Political Reactions
Political parties have reacted sharply to the EC's decision. The ruling Trinamool Congress accused the opposition of creating disturbances, while the BJP and Left parties alleged that the state government was complicit in the violence. The EC has urged all parties to maintain peace and cooperate with the electoral process.
The first phase of polling in West Bengal was held on March 27, covering 30 constituencies. The state is going to polls in eight phases, with results scheduled to be declared on May 2.
