Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has issued a series of crucial directives to ensure the smooth and fair conduct of the upcoming civic elections. Appointed as the District Returning Officer, Gagrani has mandated a comprehensive inspection of all polling stations across the city before the finalisation of the voter list.
Key Directives for Election Preparedness
In a high-level meeting held on Thursday, Gagrani laid out the immediate action plan for the returning officers and senior civic officials. The meeting was attended by Additional Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Joshi, Joint Municipal Commissioner Vijay Balamwar, and officials from the collector's office. The primary instruction was for officials to conduct on-site inspections of every designated polling station in Mumbai.
Following the inspections, the officers have been tasked with two critical jobs: preparing the final voters' list and establishing a dedicated help centre at each polling station to assist voters on election day. This move aims to streamline the voting process and address any last-minute queries or issues faced by the electorate.
Infrastructure and Amenities Upgrade
Recognising the importance of basic facilities, the BMC has also initiated the process to upgrade infrastructure at polling stations. The civic body has floated tenders to provide essential amenities, including toilets and electricity, at all locations. This step is intended to make the voting experience more comfortable and accessible for every citizen.
Mumbai is set to have a massive network of nearly 10,111 polling stations for the elections. To manage this enormous exercise efficiently, at least 23 returning officers have been deployed across the city's 23 administrative wards.
Ensuring Adherence to Model Code of Conduct
Commissioner Gagrani also emphasised strict compliance with the Model Code of Conduct. He directed the police and excise departments to ensure all guidelines are followed without exception. His instructions included regular patrolling, thorough vehicle inspections, and special vigilance in sensitive areas.
"Strict vigilance should be taken to prevent malpractices," Gagrani told the officials, underscoring the commitment to a free and fair electoral process.
The election schedule was formally announced by State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare. Polling across 29 municipal corporations, including the BMC, will be held on January 16, with the counting of votes scheduled for the next day. These preparations mark the beginning of the intense groundwork required for one of India's most significant civic exercises.
