Vijayawada Airport's New ATC Tower Awaits Regulatory Clearance After Successful Trial Phase

Officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) stationed at the airport have formally submitted a request to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), seeking the necessary permissions to transition regular air traffic management to the state-of-the-art facility.

The construction of this advanced ATC tower, undertaken at a substantial cost of Rs 90 crore, represents a strategic investment aimed at boosting flight operational efficiency at Vijayawada Airport. The project, which commenced in 2023, was completed over a period of two and a half years, culminating in a modern G+2 structure designed to meet contemporary aviation standards.
Comprehensive Trial Operations
For approximately one month, airport authorities conducted an extensive trial run, operating the new ATC tower in tandem with the existing one. This dual-tower approach allowed for simultaneous management of flight traffic, ensuring a seamless evaluation of the new facility's capabilities without disrupting ongoing operations.
"We have successfully conducted live air traffic management from the new ATC tower for the last 30 days," stated Vamsi Krishna, Assistant General Manager of ATC at Vijayawada Airport, in an interview. "Based on these successful trials, our officials have written to DGCA, seeking approval to shift ATC operations to the new tower."
Regulatory Assessment and Timeline
Vamsi Krishna further elaborated that a DGCA team is expected to visit Vijayawada Airport to perform an on-ground assessment of the new tower's operations. This evaluation will involve a thorough inspection of the systems and procedures in place, following which the regulatory body will grant formal approval for the transition.
"We anticipate receiving DGCA's approval within two months, as the live trials were conducted successfully without any issues," he added, expressing confidence in the tower's readiness based on the flawless trial period.
