Vande Bharat Catering Staff Accused of Assaulting Disabled Passenger in Lucknow

A disturbing video has emerged from Lucknow, showing an especially abled man allegedly being pushed to the ground by catering staff of the Vande Bharat Express, igniting widespread outrage across social media platforms. The incident took place on platform number three at Charbagh railway station in Lucknow, where train 22490, operating from Meerut City to Varanasi, makes a brief 10-minute stop.

Video Details and Allegations

The footage, recorded by another passenger and widely circulated on Tuesday, captures a staff member not only pushing the passenger but also taking out his belt in a threatening manner. According to a voiceover in the video, the argument began after the passenger was served a different dish instead of the ordered shahi paneer and questioned the staff about the discrepancy. The voiceover further alleges that the staff attempted to extort money from the passenger, which escalated into the physical altercation.

Railway Response and Public Reaction

Following the video going viral, the Lucknow division of Northern Railway responded on social media, tagging IRCTC. In their statement, the railways acknowledged that an especially abled passenger was involved in an argument with catering staff and stated that the concerned licensee has been warned to ensure courteous behavior towards passengers. However, this response has done little to quell public anger.

On social media, reactions have been sharp and critical. One user wrote on X, “This is shameful. How can railway staff treat a disabled passenger like this and still get away with a warning?” Another user commented, “Vande Bharat is meant to showcase world-class service. Incidents like these defeat the purpose.”

Calls for Accountability and Sensitisation

Several social media users have demanded stricter action against the staff involved, emphasizing the need for accountability and better sensitisation of railway service personnel, particularly when dealing with vulnerable passengers. The incident has raised serious concerns about the treatment of disabled individuals on India's premium trains and the effectiveness of current disciplinary measures.
