UK Moves to Fully Digital Immigration with eVisas Replacing Physical Stickers
The United Kingdom is taking a major step toward modernizing its immigration system. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has announced plans to replace all physical visa stickers with digital eVisas by 2026. This shift marks a significant move away from paper-based documentation.
Phased Transition Begins in January 2026
The transition to a digital system is already underway. Starting January 12, 2026, most people granted UK visit visas and some other visa types will receive both an eVisa and a physical sticker. This interim phase helps bridge the gap as the UK moves completely away from paper proof of immigration status.
Later in 2026, UKVI will stop issuing visa stickers altogether. All successful applicants will then receive only an eVisa. This change aims to streamline processes and enhance security.
Earlier Deadlines for Specific Visa Categories
Some applicants face earlier changes. If you or your dependents apply on or after October 30, 2025 for certain work, study, family visas, or indefinite leave to enter, you might not get a visa sticker at all. Successful applicants in these categories will need to access their immigration permission through a UKVI account before traveling to the UK.
Notably, eVisas have already replaced stickers for some main applicants on work and study visas submitted on or after July 15, 2025.
Who Can Access an eVisa Now?
UKVI has expanded access to eVisas. More people can now create a UKVI account if they were:
- Issued a Form for Affixing a Visa (FAV)
- Granted a visa extension but lack a valid identity document like a passport or expired biometric residence permit (BRP)
To view an eVisa, applicants must have a UKVI account. Dependants, including partners and children, need their own individual accounts.
Eligibility for eVisas
You can usually access an eVisa if you hold:
- Any visa allowing stays in the UK for more than six months
- Settlement in the UK (indefinite leave to remain)
You can also access an eVisa for stays of six months or less if you hold:
- A visit, work, study, or transit visa
- Most types of family visa
Applicants typically learn about eVisa access when they receive their visa decision. People with physical immigration documents proving settlement status and no expiry date can choose to move to an eVisa by submitting a 'no time limit' application.
Who Does Not Need an eVisa?
You do not need an eVisa if you:
- Are visiting the UK using an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
- Are exempt from immigration control, such as diplomats or individuals with the right of abode
- Have permission to stay in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man
Checking for an Existing UKVI Account
You likely already have a UKVI account if you have previously:
- Used the UK Immigration: ID Check app
- Created an account during a visa application
- Replaced a physical immigration document like a BRP or BRC with an eVisa
- Applied under the EU Settlement Scheme
UKVI advises against creating a second account. If unsure, try signing in to view your eVisa.
Creating a UKVI Account
To create an account, applicants need:
- A valid email address and phone number
- One of the following, if available:
- A valid passport and visa application number (GWF or UAN)
- A valid passport and BRP number
- An expired BRP card (usable for up to 18 months after expiry)
After creating an account, users must confirm their identity and link it to their eVisa. This usually requires a smartphone to install an identity verification app. Alternative methods exist for those without a passport, BRP, or smartphone.
The UK's move to eVisas represents a significant modernization of its immigration framework. This digital shift promises greater convenience and security for travelers and residents alike.
