Sandhu's Assumption of Office and Background
Taranjit Singh Sandhu officially assumed charge as Delhi's Lieutenant Governor on March 11 during a ceremony held at Lok Niwas, the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor. The oath of office was administered by the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, cabinet members, and senior officials in attendance. Sandhu succeeds V K Saxena, who served in the position for nearly four years.
His appointment was announced by President Droupadi Murmu as part of a broader reshuffle of gubernatorial positions across India. A 1988-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Sandhu brings over three decades of diplomatic experience to the role. His career includes serving as India's ambassador to Washington DC, deputy chief of mission in the United States from 2013 to 2017, and earlier as first secretary (political).
