At midnight near Neduntheevu, a boat owned by Sasikumar was intercepted by the Sri Lankan navy. This led to the arrest of four crew members: Ramar, 38, Veeranan, 55, Karuppiah, 53, and Abraham, 23. The navy confiscated the vessel as part of the enforcement action against alleged boundary violations.
Dramatic Rescue Amidst Sinking Vessel
In a parallel and harrowing development, another boat owned by Simpson encountered a severe crisis while returning to the coast. The vessel's side wooden planks gave way, causing seawater to gush in rapidly, and it began to sink. The three crew members—Srinivasan, Sebastian, and Susai Viyagulam—were forced to jump into the sea to save their lives.
They managed to stay afloat by clinging to ice boxes and diesel cans for several hours in the open waters. Eventually, the Sri Lankan navy spotted them and conducted a rescue operation, securing the fishermen and pulling out the sinking boat. This rescue underscores the perilous conditions faced by fishermen in these waters, where technical snags can lead to life-threatening situations.
