Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has urged Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to ease height restrictions on buildings near Bengaluru's defence airports, citing the need for urban development and infrastructure growth. Bengaluru has four operational airports, two of which are defence airbases — HAL Airport and Yelahanka Airbase. The current restrictions limit construction heights in surrounding areas, hindering real estate projects and city expansion.
Background of Height Restrictions
The height curbs are enforced to ensure safety and operational efficiency of the defence airbases. However, Shivakumar argued that these restrictions are impeding Bengaluru's development as a major metropolitan city. He emphasized that with proper coordination and safety measures, some relaxation can be implemented without compromising security.
Shivakumar's Appeal to the Defence Minister
In a letter to Rajnath Singh, Shivakumar highlighted the challenges faced by residents and developers due to the existing norms. He requested a review of the regulations, especially for areas not directly under flight paths. The Deputy CM also proposed forming a joint committee of state and defence officials to assess feasible modifications.
Potential Impact of Relaxation
If approved, the relaxation could unlock significant real estate potential, allowing taller buildings in key zones. This would support Bengaluru's growing population and economic activities. However, defence authorities are likely to prioritize operational safety, making any changes subject to rigorous evaluation.
The issue has gained attention as Bengaluru continues to expand, with calls for balancing urban growth and national security. Shivakumar's appeal is seen as a step towards addressing these competing demands.
