Russia on Friday sharply criticized Israel and the United States over the ongoing Middle East conflict. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova alleged that the February 28 strikes on Iran were orchestrated by Washington to serve Israeli interests, which she said have historically disregarded the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Russia Accuses US of Supporting Aggression
The Russian diplomat accused the United States of backing what she termed 'aggression' against Iran. Zakharova highlighted that the strikes undermine regional stability and violate international norms. She noted that the US actions reflect a pattern of ignoring global non-proliferation commitments.
Mixed Signals on Ceasefire
However, Zakharova also responded to former US President Donald Trump's decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran. She expressed hope that both sides would succeed in resolving their differences and reaching final agreements. This statement came amid reports of continued tensions between Tehran and Washington.
The remarks from Moscow underscore growing friction between Russia and the West over Middle East policy. Russia has consistently called for diplomatic solutions and opposed unilateral military actions. The Kremlin aide's warning suggests that continued strikes could lead to broader regional conflict.
Analysts view Russia's stance as part of its broader strategy to counter US influence in the region. By criticizing the strikes, Moscow aims to position itself as a defender of international law and a key mediator in the Iran nuclear issue.
