Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Advocates Self-Reliance Amid Global Turbulence

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh declared on Friday that self-reliance is the "only way to stay relevant and ready" in the current era of global uncertainty. Speaking at the inauguration of 'Sagar Sankalp - Reclaiming India's Maritime Glory', a defence and maritime dialogue in Kolkata, he highlighted how the shifting global landscape necessitates a robust domestic industrial base.

Global Uncertainties and Maritime Significance

Singh pointed to the realignment of supply chains, formation of new geopolitical equations, and constant rise in maritime activities as key factors driving India's push for self-reliance. He specifically addressed the strategic importance of regions like the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf, noting their critical role in global energy security.

"When there is a disturbance in the region, it directly impacts the supply of oil and gas. Moreover, we're witnessing supply chain disruptions in other sectors as well. These uncertainties have a direct impact on the economy and global trade," Singh stated. He expressed concern that what was once considered abnormal in global affairs is increasingly becoming the new normal, citing the volatile situation in West Asia as a prime example.

Record Defence Production and Export Targets

The minister revealed that government efforts toward self-reliance in defence are yielding significant results. Domestic defence production surpassed a record Rs 1.5 lakh crore in fiscal 2024-25, with defence exports reaching an all-time high of Rs 24,000 crore. Looking ahead, Singh projected that defence exports are poised to hit Rs 29,000 crore by April 2026, with an ambitious target of Rs 50,000 crore by FY 2029-2030.

Strengthening the Defence Industrial Ecosystem

Singh identified defence public sector undertakings as a key pillar of the self-reliance vision. In the shipbuilding sector, entities like Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd and other shipyards are receiving special focus to build a strong and futuristic domestic industrial ecosystem. "The goal is to develop ships into technology hubs, not just production units," he emphasized.

Technological Advancements and Private Sector Role

Describing "technological dynamism" as crucial, Singh noted that technology is driving unprecedented changes, particularly in defence, where high-end and precision technologies are increasingly utilized. The government aims to achieve 'atmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in defence technology to prepare for emerging challenges.

He also acknowledged the growing contribution of private industries, which currently constitute 25% of defence platforms, equipment, and accessories manufactured in India. Singh expressed confidence that this share would soon increase to 50% of total defence production by value, further bolstering the nation's self-reliance agenda.
