In a significant diplomatic gathering, the United States Ambassador to China, David Perdue, convened with his counterparts from Australia, India, and Japan in Beijing on Tuesday. The meeting of the Quad nations' envoys served to reaffirm the group's shared vision for a "free and open" Indo-Pacific, a message delivered against the tense backdrop of major Chinese military exercises encircling Taiwan.
Quad Unity Amidst Regional Tensions
Taking to social media platform X after the conclave, Ambassador Perdue underscored the resilience and purpose of the four-nation coalition. He described the Quad as "a force for good" dedicated to upholding regional stability and emphasised that the cooperative ties between the US, Australia, India, and Japan remain robust. This show of solidarity comes at a critical juncture, directly following the launch of extensive Chinese war games near the Taiwan Strait, which have significantly heightened geopolitical temperatures.
China's 'Justice Mission 2025' and Taiwan's Response
The Quad ambassadors' meeting was held just a day after the People's Liberation Army (PLA) initiated a large-scale, multi-service joint military exercise around Taiwan. Codenamed "Justice Mission 2025," the drills involve coordinated actions by the PLA's ground forces, air force, navy, and missile units under the Eastern Theatre Command. According to Senior Colonel Shi Yi, a command spokesperson, the activities include air and maritime patrols, simulated strikes on key targets, port blockades, and deterrence operations, all designed to test joint combat readiness.
Taiwan swiftly condemned the exercises as provocative and destabilising. The island's Ministry of National Defence (MND) stated it strongly opposes the PLA's actions, which it said undermine regional peace. In response, Taiwan activated its own "Rapid Response Exercise," placing all military branches and the coast guard on high alert to monitor the situation. Defence Minister Wellington Koo accused the PLA of threatening regional stability and civilian traffic, while Deputy Chief of General Staff Lt Gen Lien Chih-wei labelled Beijing's actions as irresponsible.
Surge in PLA Activity and Wider Strategic Context
The Taiwanese defence ministry reported a sharp spike in Chinese military manoeuvres, detecting 130 PLA aircraft, 14 naval vessels, and 8 official ships operating around the island. Notably, 90 of these aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan's air defence identification zone. This military posturing occurs within a broader strategic context. Last month, the US administration approved a substantial arms package for Taiwan valued at approximately $11.1 billion, a move that undoubtedly influences the current dynamics.
In this volatile environment, the Quad's diplomatic engagement in Beijing sends a clear signal. It projects a unified front and a continued commitment to a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific, even as immediate security tensions around Taiwan remain dangerously elevated.
