Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Gets Green Light from Railway Minister

In a significant boost to India's rail infrastructure, Mumbai is poised to receive its inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper train service connecting to Bengaluru. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has formally sanctioned this premium overnight corridor, linking Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai with KSR Bengaluru.

Official Approval and Public Announcement

The development came to public attention after Bengaluru Central MP P. C. Mohan shared a copy of the minister's approval letter dated April 5 on his social media platforms. In the letter, Vaishnaw explicitly stated, "the introduction of new Vande Bharat Sleeper train between KSR Bengaluru and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (T) has been approved."

Sources within the railway ministry have indicated that two sleeper Vande Bharat rakes are likely to be deployed for this route. One rake will originate from Mumbai, while the other will start from Bengaluru, facilitating a daily overnight up-and-down service between these two major metropolitan hubs.

Second Vande Bharat Sleeper Corridor in India

This Mumbai–Bengaluru service will mark the second Vande Bharat Sleeper corridor in the country. It follows the inaugural service launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January this year, which connected Howrah and Guwahati (Kamakhya), bridging West Bengal and Assam.

Currently, the only dedicated daily train between Bengaluru and Mumbai is the Udyan Express. This service operates via Guntakal and Kalaburagi, covering a distance of 1,136 kilometers and primarily serving Andhra Pradesh. The journey time stands at 23 hours and 35 minutes from Bengaluru to Mumbai, with a return trip taking 21 hours and 50 minutes.

Existing Train Services and Travel Times

Additional train options include:

  • One LTT-SMVB weekly special train.
  • Other trains from Mumbai passing via Bengaluru, such as the Trivandrum Express (daily), LTT-Coimbatore Express (daily), Dadar Pondicherry Express, and Dadar-Tirunelveli Express (both tri-weekly).

Among these, the Trivandrum Express is the fastest, completing the journey in 18 hours and 44 minutes.

Premium Features and Enhanced Travel Experience

Designed specifically for long-distance journeys, the Vande Bharat Sleeper train comprises 16 modern coaches with a total passenger capacity of 823. Capable of operating at speeds up to 180 kmph, this train is expected to significantly reduce travel time while delivering a quiet and premium travel experience.

Key amenities include:

  1. Ergonomically Designed Sleeping Berths: Engineered to provide superior body support for overnight journeys, ensuring passenger comfort.
  2. Automatic Doors with Vestibules: These features between coaches aim to ensure safe and convenient movement within the train.
  3. Advanced Suspension System: Intended to enhance ride quality by minimizing jerks and vibrations, offering a smoother journey.
  4. Modern Toilets and Disinfectant Technology: Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and advanced disinfectant systems to maintain hygiene standards.

The introduction of this service is set to revolutionize overnight travel between Mumbai and Bengaluru, providing a faster, more comfortable alternative to existing options.
