Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended a warm, personal welcome to Russian President Vladimir Putin upon his arrival in New Delhi on Thursday, marking the start of a significant two-day state visit. The Russian leader is in the Indian capital for the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit, a key diplomatic event aimed at strengthening the long-standing partnership between the two nations.
A Warm Welcome and a Shared Ride
The reception at the Palam Technical Area was notably cordial, underscoring the personal rapport between the two leaders. Prime Minister Modi greeted President Putin with a firm handshake that quickly turned into a warm hug. In a gesture highlighting their close ties, the two statesmen then departed the airport together in the same car.
Capturing the moment, PM Modi later shared a selfie from the car on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. In his post, he expressed his delight at hosting his "friend." "Delighted to welcome my friend, President Putin to India," the Prime Minister wrote. "Looking forward to our interactions later this evening and tomorrow. India-Russia friendship is a time-tested one that has greatly benefitted our people."
Agenda for the 23rd Annual Summit
The high-level talks during President Putin's visit are expected to cover a wide spectrum of bilateral issues. The core discussions between Modi and Putin will centre on enhancing cooperation in critical areas such as trade, investment, defence, and broader economic collaboration.
In addition to the one-on-one meetings, President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to formally receive the Russian President at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The visit will also feature a grand state banquet hosted by President Murmu in honour of the distinguished guest, adding ceremonial weight to the diplomatic engagements.

This summit comes at a crucial juncture in global geopolitics and serves to reaffirm the resilience of the India-Russia strategic partnership.
