Ahmedabad is set to host a unique blend of diplomacy and cultural heritage when Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomes German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to the city on January 12. The itinerary is designed to offer the visiting dignitary an immersive experience of Gujarat's vibrant traditions, moving beyond formal meeting rooms.
A Day Steeped in Heritage and Celebration
The high-profile visit will commence at the historic Gandhi Ashram, a site deeply connected to India's freedom struggle. Following this, the leaders will proceed to the Sabarmati Riverfront, the venue for the much-anticipated International Kite Festival. Authorities have meticulously prepared the riverfront to serve as a cultural showcase, transforming it into a window to Ahmedabad's famed pol tradition—the intricate, clustered neighbourhoods of the old city.
Metro Travel and Security Preparations
Sources indicate that Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz are expected to travel via the Ahmedabad Metro from the city to Mahatma Mandir, highlighting the city's modern infrastructure. However, officials have noted that the final itinerary for the VVIPs is subject to change. Local authorities have conducted thorough route inspections and security drills for multiple potential motorcade routes to ensure seamless and safe passage.
The Cultural Showcase at the Riverfront
Extensive preparations are complete at the riverfront venue. A standout feature is a life-size replica of a traditional pol, complete with house facades that echo the old city's distinctive architectural style. At the heart of this installation stands a chabutaro, or bird feeder, which will form the focal point of the performance stage and symbolises the identity of Ahmedabad's Walled City.
Adding to the authenticity, a terrace locally known as a dhaabu has been recreated as part of the setup. This terrace is likely to be used as a special viewing station for the leaders to enjoy the colourful spectacle of the International Kite Festival.
The visit underscores the government's intent to use cultural diplomacy as a soft power tool, presenting India's rich heritage alongside its developmental progress to global leaders.
