The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned the US Charge d'Affaires for the second time in recent weeks to protest against strikes on merchant ships carrying Indian crew members. The move underscores India's growing unease over the safety of its seafarers in conflict zones.
Diplomatic Action Over Maritime Incidents
India's diplomatic démarche comes after a series of attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and surrounding waters, some of which involved Indian nationals. The MEA conveyed New Delhi's strong concerns and urged all parties to ensure the safety of merchant shipping and civilian crews.
The US envoy was reminded of the need to uphold international law and protect freedom of navigation. India also called for restraint and de-escalation to prevent further endangerment of lives.
Background of the Summons
This is the second time in a month that India has summoned the US diplomat over similar incidents. Earlier, India had expressed its displeasure over the lack of adequate warning or protection for vessels with Indian personnel. The repeated summoning indicates the seriousness with which India views the matter.
Indian officials highlighted that several merchant ships have come under drone or missile attacks, leading to injuries and damage. The MEA emphasized that such actions threaten global trade and maritime security.
India's Stance on Regional Security
India has consistently advocated for peace and stability in the region. The government is in touch with multiple countries to ensure the safety of Indian seafarers. New Delhi has also strengthened its naval presence in the area to protect commercial traffic.
The US side has acknowledged India's concerns and assured that it will take necessary measures to prevent recurrence. However, India continues to monitor the situation closely and reserves the right to take further action if required.
The development comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where Houthi rebels have targeted ships in solidarity with Palestinians. India has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
