Ireland Vows Zero Tolerance for Violence Against Indian Community, Says Minister
Ireland Won't Tolerate Violence Against Indians: Minister

Irish Migration Minister Colm Brophy has made a firm commitment during his official visit to India. He stated that the Irish government will not tolerate any violence against the Indian community in Ireland. Brophy emphasized that even rare instances of attacks are unacceptable.

Strong Assurance on Safety

Minister Brophy addressed concerns about violent incidents last year. He described them as actions by a small minority of extremists. The Irish government met with Indian community leaders immediately. They pledged to work together to prevent such events.

"We will not tolerate these small, rare instances," Brophy said. He added that violent attacks on people contributing to Irish society are totally unacceptable. The Indian community is now one of the largest in Ireland. Brophy noted their positive experience and wonderful contributions.

Migration and Integration Plans

Ireland is preparing to introduce new migration regulations. These come from the European Union Migration Act. Brophy explained that Ireland will adopt separate legislation. This will harmonize processes for handling migration and international protection.

More Indians are coming to Ireland for work and study. Later this year, Ireland will launch a new policy on migration and integration. It will manage overall numbers and provide opportunities. People who have been in Ireland long-term will get chances to attain citizenship.

Political and Trade Relations

Brophy described the relationship between Ireland and India as very strong. He had positive discussions with Indian ministers during his visit. At least three Irish ministerial visits to India are planned for the first half of this year.

A Prime Minister-level visit between the two countries is also being scheduled. Brophy highlighted the potential for an EU-India Free Trade Agreement. Current trade between Ireland and India involves billions of pounds. Growth potential in this area is exponential, according to the minister.

Views on Global Issues

Minister Brophy shared Ireland's stance on several international matters. On US President Donald Trump's immigration approach, Brophy said it is not shared by Ireland or many European states. Regarding Trump's interest in Greenland, Brophy supported the European position that Greenland is part of Denmark.

On the war in Gaza, Brophy acknowledged connections between Irish and Palestinian people. He condemned the horrendous terror attack that killed Israeli citizens. However, he stressed that any state response must be proportionate and target the terrorist attack specifically.

India's Economic Transformation

Brophy commented on the Indian government's push to shed colonial mindset. He believes the most important achievement has been driving economic prosperity. From Ireland's experience, economic transformation helps a country take its place in the world.

"When that is achieved, that develops the way and the mind and the way in which a country views itself," Brophy stated. He sees parallels between Ireland's journey and India's current trajectory.

The minister's visit underscores growing ties between Ireland and India. His assurances on community safety and plans for enhanced cooperation signal a strengthening bilateral relationship.
