Indian Army Completes Apache Fleet Induction With Final 3 AH-64E Helicopters
Indian Army gets final 3 Apache attack helicopters

The Indian Army has achieved a significant milestone in its military modernization drive with the formal completion of its Apache attack helicopter fleet induction. The Army Aviation Corps has taken delivery of the final three AH-64E Apache helicopters, marking the conclusion of a contract for six of these advanced aircraft.

Delivery Marks End of Delayed Timeline

The arrival of this last batch formally concludes a delivery schedule that had seen multiple revisions and delays. Initial projections had anticipated the start of deliveries in 2023, which was first pushed to 2024. The first batch of Apaches, initially expected around February or March of this year, ultimately reached India only in July. The completion of deliveries now enables the Army to operationalise its full fleet of six AH-64E Apaches.

The US Embassy in India announced the update, highlighting it as a key step in the bilateral defence relationship. In a post on social media platform X, the Embassy stated the delivery fulfills commitments made in a joint statement by the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of India, calling it "another step forward in the US-India Major Defence Partnership."

Operational Deployment and Strategic Significance

According to the Indian Army, the newly arrived helicopters will be deployed after necessary assembly, joint inspections, and the completion of mandatory technical and administrative procedures. Once fully inducted, the Apache fleet is slated to be based in Jodhpur.

This induction follows high-level political and defence assurances and is viewed as a reflection of the deepening strategic alignment between New Delhi and Washington, particularly in the realm of regional security and defence cooperation. The move underscores an expanding partnership that now extends beyond simple procurement to include elements like co-production, joint training, and technology exchange.

Enhanced Combat Capabilities for the Army

The AH-64E Apache is recognized globally as one of the most advanced and lethal attack helicopter platforms. Its induction is expected to provide a substantial boost to the Indian Army's combat prowess. Defence officials have emphasized that the helicopter will significantly enhance the Army's capabilities in several key areas:

  • Precision strike against hardened targets.
  • Advanced surveillance and reconnaissance.
  • Integrated battlefield management systems.

The platform is set to strengthen the Army's operational readiness, especially when operating in challenging terrains and high-threat environments. The completion of this delivery marks a critical enhancement of the Army Aviation Corps' offensive firepower and aerial reconnaissance capabilities.
