Jaishankar Calls Thailand 'Important Maritime Neighbour', BRICS Bid Discussed
India, Thailand Strengthen Strategic Ties, Discuss BRICS & Myanmar

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar reinforced India's strong bilateral ties with Thailand during high-level talks, describing the Southeast Asian nation as a very important maritime neighbour. The meeting with Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow underscored the deep-rooted friendship and shared strategic interests between the two countries.

Strategic Partnership & Multilateral Progress

Dr. Jaishankar recalled the pivotal moment in April 2025 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bangkok for the BIMSTEC Summit. This visit formally elevated the India-Thailand relationship to a strategic partnership, marking a new chapter in cooperation. Both ministers welcomed the positive momentum in their collaboration across various multilateral and regional forums, acknowledging the growing alignment on broader Indo-Pacific issues.

A significant diplomatic request emerged during the discussions. Thailand formally sought India's support for its bid to join the BRICS grouping. This request is timed with India's upcoming chairmanship of BRICS in 2026, placing New Delhi in a key position to influence the group's expansion.

Broadening Horizons of Cooperation

The bilateral dialogue covered an extensive agenda, highlighting diverse areas of mutual interest and collaboration. Key sectors identified for enhanced engagement include:

  • Digital Technologies and Innovation: Leveraging mutual strengths in the tech sector.
  • Trade and Connectivity: Boosting economic links and physical & digital connectivity.
  • Maritime Heritage and Security: Cooperation reflecting their shared maritime boundary in the Andaman Sea.
  • MSMEs, Handlooms, and Handicrafts: Promoting grassroots economic and cultural exchanges.

Addressing Regional Challenges

The ministers also delved into pressing geopolitical concerns, with a particular focus on the evolving situation in neighbouring Myanmar. As both countries share a border with Myanmar and are affected by its instability, the discussion highlighted the need for a coordinated regional approach. They emphasized the critical importance of regular high-level exchanges to navigate such complex challenges and strengthen overall regional collaboration and stability.

The talks concluded on a forward-looking note, with both sides committed to implementing the understandings reached during PM Modi's 2025 visit and exploring new avenues to deepen the strategic partnership in the coming years.
