IAF Chief A P Singh Engages in Strategic Defence Dialogue with US Counterparts
As part of his ongoing tour in the United States, Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh conducted high-level discussions with senior US Air Force officials to reinforce the burgeoning defence partnership between the two nations. The talks centered on shared strategic priorities, the procurement of advanced MQ-9B Sky Guardian drones, and bolstering cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Full Honors and Key Meetings at the Pentagon
On April 8, Air Chief Marshal Singh received a full honors arrival at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, marking the commencement of his official engagements. He subsequently met with Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink and Chief of Staff General Ken Wilsbach at the Pentagon. These meetings underscored the commitment of both countries to deepening their military collaboration.
General Wilsbach expressed his honor in hosting the IAF chief, stating that the discussions were pivotal for modernisation efforts, expanding training opportunities, and reaffirming a mutual dedication to a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific. He lauded India's active participation in multilateral exercises and emphasized the need for continued cooperation to enhance deterrence capabilities.
Focus on MQ-9B Drone Procurement and Integration
A significant highlight of the talks was the MQ-9B Sky Guardian drone deal, with General Wilsbach welcoming India's procurement and assuring ongoing US support for its effective integration into Indian armed forces operations. This move is expected to significantly boost surveillance capabilities along India's borders with China and Pakistan.
On October 15, 2024, India formalized a $4 billion agreement (approximately Rs 32,000 crore) to acquire 31 MQ-9B Predator drones from the United States. The deal includes 15 SeaGuardians for the Navy and 16 SkyGuardians for the Army and Air Force, with deliveries scheduled to commence in January 2029 and conclude by September 2030.
Expanding Cooperation Through Visits and Training
In a post on X, the IAF chief highlighted that the discussions with US officials focused on joint training, interoperability, MQ-9B drones, and modernisation initiatives. Following the Pentagon meetings, Air Chief Marshal Singh visited Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado for briefings on the binational North American Aerospace Defence Command mission, which encompasses aerospace warning, control, and maritime warning for North America.
The tour continued at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, where Singh received briefings at the US Air Force Warfare Centre and experienced a familiarisation flight in an F-15EX Eagle II. According to a statement from the US Air Force, Singh remarked that such opportunities are crucial for building joint interoperability and strengthening the strategic partnership between the air forces.
Staff Talks and Future Collaborative Efforts
The office call was followed by comprehensive staff talks, addressing topics such as the National Guard Bureau's State Partnership Programme, the Air National Guard's Advanced Airlift Tactics Training Centre, and full-spectrum MQ-9 operations. These discussions aim to pave the way for enhanced coordination and shared operational frameworks.
This series of engagements underscores the growing defence synergy between India and the United States, with a clear focus on modernisation, regional security, and mutual strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific.
