In a significant diplomatic engagement, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met with his Bangladeshi counterpart Khalilur Rahman on Wednesday, just days after former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was convicted of crimes against humanity by the International Crimes Tribunal. The discussions come as NSA Doval prepares to host his counterparts from CSC member states in Delhi for the seventh NSA CSC Meet scheduled for November 20. The meeting will bring together representatives from Maldives, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, with Seychelles participating as an Observer State and Malaysia invited as a Guest.
Background: The Hasina Conviction
The political context of this meeting cannot be overlooked. Earlier this week, Sheikh Hasina received a death sentence for crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising last year. The specific charges relate to the shooting and killing of six unarmed protesters in Dhaka's Chankharpul area on August 5 last year.
