New Delhi has been transformed into a high-security fortress as the capital prepares to welcome Russian President Vladimir Putin later today. This marks his first visit to India in four years, coming at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.
Unprecedented Security Blanket for VVIP
Authorities have rolled out an extensive and multi-layered security plan to ensure the Russian leader's safety. Senior police officials confirmed that from the moment Air Force One touches down until President Putin departs, multiple specialized units will jointly monitor every movement.
The security apparatus includes the deployment of elite Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) squads and sniper teams at all sensitive points along the route. Quick-reaction teams are on standby to address any emerging threats. In a modern response to potential risks, anti-drone guns have been strategically positioned to counter any aerial threats, as reported.
Top officers of the Delhi Police are personally overseeing route security, traffic management, and area sanitisation at all locations expected to be on the president's itinerary. A senior officer told PTI, "Minute-to-minute coordination is underway, and all concerned agencies have been instructed to maintain maximum vigilance throughout. Over 5,000 police personnel will be deployed to maintain strict vigil."
Tech Surveillance and Public Advisories
The security grid is heavily reliant on technology. High-definition CCTV networks and advanced technical monitoring systems have been activated across all areas linked to the high-profile visit. To manage movement, traffic restrictions and regulated pedestrian access will be enforced near key locations.
However, officials have assured that advance alerts and traffic advisories will be issued periodically to minimise inconvenience to daily commuters. "All routes mapped for VVIP movement have been secured in advance. Traffic advisories will be issued from time to time to minimise inconvenience," another official mentioned.
Agenda: Defence and Nuclear Cooperation in Focus
The summit is expected to yield significant discussions on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov outlined potential talking points, highlighting defence and energy collaboration.
On the agenda is the potential addition of another S-400 missile defence system for India and discussions on the advanced Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft, which Peskov described as "the best plane in the world." Moscow is keen to expand defence technology cooperation, including on joint projects like the BrahMos missile.
Furthermore, Russia aims to bolster collaboration in the civil nuclear sector. Moscow is ready to offer India compact reactor technology while continuing work on existing major projects like the Kudankulam nuclear power plant.
Background of the Bilateral Engagement
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Putin last met in person on September 1 during the SCO Heads of State Council Meeting in Tianjin, China. Since then, the two leaders have maintained contact, holding five phone conversations in the current year, 2025. This visit underscores the continued importance both nations place on their long-standing bilateral ties, even amid global geopolitical shifts.
