Station superintendent Umesh Kumar addressed the incident on Monday. He explained the unexpected nature of the rush. "There was a huge rush of passengers on platform number one on Sunday," Kumar stated. "We did not anticipate this abrupt surge. Most of the crowd consisted of women, children, and girls."
The majority of these passengers were traveling to Gaya railway station. Their destination was the Phalgu river for a holy dip. This ritual is associated with Mauni Amavasya, a significant religious occasion.

The situation escalated as more than one thousand passengers attempted to board a single train. This train was the Up Barkakana Patna Junction Palamu Express. The sheer number of people created a chaotic and dangerous environment on the platform.
