Bengal Minister Clarifies Cattle Slaughter Law for Eid Sacrifice
Bengal Minister on Cattle Slaughter Law for Eid

West Bengal municipal affairs minister Agnimitra Paul has clarified that cattle slaughter remains legal in the state, provided it is carried out under the provisions already in force. Speaking to the media, Paul said, “We have never asked anyone to close their shops. There are specific provisions in the existing Act we have to adhere to. There is a 2018 High Court judgment and there is a government order from June 2022. The decision was taken keeping everything in mind.”

Context of the Statement

Paul's remarks came in response to an appeal by a prominent cleric, who had urged Muslims to avoid buying cows for sacrifice during Eid. The cleric's appeal had sparked confusion and debate over the legality of cattle slaughter in the state. Paul sought to allay concerns by emphasizing that the existing legal framework remains in place and that no new restrictions have been imposed.

Legal Framework

The minister highlighted two key legal references: a 2018 judgment from the Calcutta High Court and a state government order from June 2022. These documents outline the specific conditions under which cattle slaughter is permitted. While Paul did not elaborate on the details, she stressed that the state government is committed to upholding the law and ensuring that all provisions are followed.

The clarification comes at a time when religious sentiments and legal interpretations often intersect. By reaffirming the status quo, the state government aims to prevent any unnecessary panic or misinformation among the public.
