Last week witnessed a remarkable gathering in Nepal. Indian Army veterans met with Gorkha ex-servicemen in a heartfelt reunion. This unique outreach stemmed from deep regimental camaraderie and a shared military legacy.
Project Aaphant Maya: A Vision of Reconnection
The initiative, known as Project Aaphant Maya, was the brainchild of Colonel Lalit Rai (retd). Colonel Rai is a Vir Chakra awardee from the Kargil War. He felt a strong desire to reconnect with former comrades. Lieutenant General Ajai Kumar Singh (retd) also joined this meaningful mission. Both officers previously commanded the distinguished 1/11 Gorkha Rifles regiment.
The Legacy of the 1/11 Gorkha Rifles
This regiment holds a place of great honor in Indian military history. It received the Battle Honour Batalik and the Theatre Honour Kargil for its exceptional bravery during Operation Vijay. The battalion's success came at a high cost. It lost Captain Manoj Pandey, a Param Vir Chakra recipient, along with thirteen other brave soldiers.
Objectives of the Reunion
Project Aaphant Maya had clear and noble goals. It aimed to rebuild connections with Gorkha ex-servicemen and their families. The project sought to honor their immense service and sacrifices. Furthermore, it worked to reaffirm the lifelong bonds created during their time in uniform.
A Gathering Against All Odds
The response to the call for reunion was overwhelming. Approximately 435 veterans and their family members made the journey. They traveled from remote and distant areas across Nepal. These elderly veterans faced significant challenges. They overcame advanced age, health issues, and difficult logistics to attend.
The events took place in Ilam and Birthamod, Nepal, on January 9th and 10th. Their sheer determination to be present highlighted a powerful truth. The spirit of camaraderie and regimental loyalty endures long after soldiers retire.
Honoring Sacrifice and Providing Support
The gathering included solemn moments of remembrance. Prayers were offered for soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. The event also paid tribute to Veer Naaris, the brave wives of fallen heroes.
Practical support was a key component of the initiative. Financial assistance totaling more than fifteen lakh rupees was distributed. This aid went directly to ex-servicemen in need and to meritorious students from their families.
Strengthening International Bonds
This initiative achieved more than a simple reunion. It actively strengthened the deep ties between India and Nepal. The project reinforced bonds of friendship, mutual trust, and a shared military heritage. It served as a living testament to the enduring connection forged by soldiers who served side by side.
