The Madhya Pradesh government has initiated a major infrastructure overhaul in Ujjain, anticipating a massive influx of an estimated 30 crore devotees for the upcoming Simhastha festival in 2028. The preparations, starting immediately, focus on significantly scaling up accommodation and road networks to manage the unprecedented footfall.
Luxury Hotel Expansion Near Mahakal Temple
At the forefront of the accommodation upgrade is the expansion of the state's premium hotel property, Maharajwada, located near the revered Mahakal temple. Operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (MPTDC), the hotel recently opened with 19 well-appointed rooms. The corporation now plans to add 11 more luxury rooms in the open space behind the existing structure.
This expansion, with an estimated cost of Rs 22 crore, is specifically designed to meet the anticipated surge in demand during the month-long religious congregation. MPTDC Managing Director Ilayaraja T stated that the move aims to improve capacity and enhance the overall visitor experience for the historic event.
Comprehensive Refurbishment Across Ujjain
The upgrade strategy is not limited to the new property. MPTDC currently operates three other hotels in the holy city: Hotel Avantika (32 rooms), Ujjaini (33 rooms), and Shipra (43 rooms). Officials confirmed that all three existing properties are slated for refurbishment and partial expansion in the coming years as part of the integrated preparations for the 2028 festival.
This concerted effort will substantially increase the state tourism corporation's overall room inventory in Ujjain. Authorities expect a major rise in visitor numbers in Ujjain and Omkareshwar well before the actual festival period begins.
Major Road Widening Projects Underway
Parallel to the hospitality upgrades, a massive road infrastructure project is in full swing to ensure smooth crowd movement and reduce congestion. A key proposal includes widening the road connecting Maharajwada hotel and directly linking it to Ram Ghat.
On a larger scale, major roads across Ujjain are being expanded to increase traffic speed. The grand plan involves upgrading a total of 52 routes covering 276.67 kilometres at a staggering cost of Rs 4815.68 crore. This infrastructure push is designed to make travel safer and more convenient for the millions of devotees.
The scale of preparation is informed by the past; the previous edition of Simhastha in 2016 attracted nearly 9 crore visitors. With expectations far exceeding that number for 2028, the state government is leaving no stone unturned to host a seamless and memorable spiritual gathering.
