Patna Haat Development Project Officially Underway with Site Demolition
The ambitious Patna Haat project has taken a significant step forward as demolition work begins on the old building at the proposed site west of Sabhyata Dwar near Gandhi Maidan. This marks the official commencement of construction for what promises to become a major tourism and cultural hub in Bihar's capital city.
From Police Accommodation to Cultural Emporium
The structure being demolished, previously known as Ekta Bhawan, served as accommodation for personnel of the Bihar Police Special Task Force (STF). The Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC) is executing the project, which will see a grand three-storey Patna Haat building constructed in its place.
The new facility is estimated to cost approximately Rs 48 crore and will be developed along the lines of the successful Delhi Haat model. The primary objective is to create a dedicated platform where local artisans can showcase and sell traditional Bihar arts and crafts to both domestic and international visitors.
Modern Facilities and Traditional Showcase
A BSTDC official confirmed that demolition work began one week ago, with construction of the Patna Haat building scheduled to start once debris removal is complete. The official emphasized that women entrepreneurs will receive special attention, with permanent platforms allocated for them to sell their products.
The emporium will feature traditional arts including:
- Madhubani painting from the Mithila region
- Bhagalpur's distinctive Manjusha art
- Patna's traditional Tikuli and Sikki crafts
- Bamboo and cane work from Samastipur
- Clay and porcelain art from Darbhanga
- Sujani embroidery from Muzaffarpur
- Stone craft from Gaya
- Buti art from Nalanda
Comprehensive Tourism Development
Patna Haat is designed to be more than just a shopping destination. The project includes comprehensive infrastructure development to ensure it becomes a family-friendly attraction. Planned facilities include:
- Underground and surface parking to manage traffic during peak hours
- Restaurants serving local and regional cuisine
- Game zones for children and youth entertainment
- Green areas, parks, and playgrounds in the surrounding vicinity
The official further revealed that Patna Haat will be directly connected to two major ongoing projects: the Ganga River Front development stretching from Collectorate Ghat to Digha, and the J P Ganga Path Samagna Udyan project. This strategic connectivity is expected to significantly increase footfall and tourist movement in the area.
The development represents a significant investment in Bihar's cultural infrastructure, aiming to preserve traditional crafts while creating economic opportunities for local artisans and entrepreneurs. Once completed, Patna Haat is positioned to become a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Bihar's rich artistic heritage.
