Kolkata Airport Launches New Restroom Block to Enhance Passenger Comfort
In a significant development for air travelers, the first of three new restroom blocks at Kolkata airport's upper arrival level became operational on Monday. This facility is specifically designed for passengers entering the domestic terminal via aerobridges, marking a major step toward improving convenience for flyers arriving in the City of Joy.
Addressing a Long-Standing Design Flaw
The new restroom block corrects a notable design oversight in the terminal, which was constructed thirteen years ago. Unlike most airports that feature restrooms near aerobridges, Kolkata airport previously required arriving passengers to navigate a cumbersome route. Flyers had to walk the entire length of the upper arrival area on the mezzanine level, descend via escalator or stairs to the lower arrival area, and then proceed past luggage belts to access restrooms.
This layout often caused discomfort, particularly for travelers on longer flights from destinations like Mumbai, Goa, Ahmedabad, or Bengaluru, where journey times exceed two and a half hours. The new facility eliminates the need for extreme bladder control upon arrival, providing immediate relief.
Positive Passenger Reactions and Enhanced Facilities
Passengers arriving on Monday expressed pleasant surprise and appreciation for the new toilet block, which includes dedicated restrooms for women, men, and disabled individuals. Rohit Agarwal, a flyer from Mumbai, highlighted the immense convenience, noting that many travelers struggle during the final descent when aircraft restrooms become restricted approximately twenty minutes before touchdown.
"During flights, when the captain announces the descent, people often queue for the washroom, clogging the galley. Crew members limit access to restrooms well before landing, making it challenging for many, especially elderly passengers, to wait," Agarwal explained.
Frequent flyer Dwaipayan Roy shared similar sentiments, describing the anxious minutes spent speed-walking through corridors with cabin bags, hoping to find a restroom before discomfort escalated. "After a two-and-a-half-hour flight from Delhi, those last fifteen minutes feel endless," Roy remarked.
Future Developments and Expanded Coverage
Airport officials have confirmed that two additional restroom blocks are currently under construction and are expected to be completed by April. Once all three facilities are operational, they will collectively serve passengers using the eleven arrival gates (numbered 14 to 25) on the upper arrival level.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to upgrading airport infrastructure and enhancing the travel experience. By addressing basic yet critical amenities, Kolkata airport aims to reduce passenger stress and improve overall satisfaction, aligning with modern aviation standards.
