Kerala's Panamkuzhy Eco-Tourism Centre Unveils Coracle Boat Rides on Periyar River

In a significant boost to eco-tourism in Kerala, Forest Minister A K Saseendran is set to inaugurate a new coracle boat ride facility at the Panamkuzhy eco-tourism centre in Perumbavoor. The inauguration ceremony, scheduled for Wednesday, will also mark the opening of other essential infrastructure upgrades at this popular destination.

Scenic River Adventures with Traditional Coracles

The eco-tourism centre, located on the eastern edge of the Abhayaranyam animal shelter in Kodanad, has arranged 10 coracle boats for visitors to enjoy rides on the picturesque Periyar River. These traditional bamboo coracles, sourced from Hogenakkal in Karnataka, offer a unique and immersive experience of Kerala's natural beauty.

Each coracle can accommodate a four-member group for a 30-minute ride at a cost of Rs 600. The ride covers a 1-kilometer distance both upstream and downstream, allowing tourists to fully appreciate the serene river environment. To ensure safety and expertise, guides have undergone specialized training at the National Institute of Water Sports for a week, equipping them to skillfully control the boats.

Enhanced Visitor Facilities and Infrastructure

Alongside the coracle rides, Minister Saseendran will inaugurate additional amenities designed to enrich the visitor experience. These include:

  • Two tree-mounted huts that provide elevated vantage points for enjoying the surrounding natural scenery.
  • 15 swings set up throughout the centre, offering recreational options for families and children.

These enhancements aim to make the Panamkuzhy eco-tourism centre a more attractive and comprehensive destination for nature enthusiasts and tourists.

Growing Popularity and Visitor Footfall

The Panamkuzhy eco-tourism centre has already established itself as a key attraction in the region. According to an official from Abhayaranyam, the centre currently witnesses an average daily footfall of around 100 visitors, with numbers surging to approximately 300 on weekends. The introduction of coracle boat rides and new infrastructure is expected to further increase its appeal, drawing more tourists to explore Kerala's rich ecological heritage.

This initiative underscores Kerala's commitment to promoting sustainable tourism that highlights its natural assets while providing engaging and educational experiences for visitors. The coracle rides, in particular, blend traditional craftsmanship with modern eco-tourism practices, offering a memorable adventure on the Periyar River.
