The Rajasthan state government has commenced the redevelopment of Shilpgram at Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK) after allocating Rs 15 crore for the project in the 2026-27 budget. This ambitious project aims to transform the space into a permanent art and crafts cultural centre while retaining its rural Rajasthani character.
Redevelopment Plans and Features
Under the redevelopment plan, 24 handicraft shops, an artist residency, and a haat bazaar will be developed across nearly nine acres. The redesigned space will showcase Rajasthan’s folk art, handicrafts, music, food, and rural lifestyle at a single venue. The project will also focus on attracting younger visitors with modern facilities and dedicated youth-centric spaces. A new food court is being planned with both traditional Rajasthani dishes and fast-food options.
Architectural Design
The art and craft centre will be designed in a traditional courtyard-style market layout inspired by old Rajasthani havelis and bazaars. Stone pillars, carved jharokhas, and shaded pathways will form part of the architecture, while small open courtyards will be created for performances and public interaction.
Tourist Attractions
Tourists visiting the revamped Shilpgram will be able to explore crafts including pottery, puppetry, jewellery, textiles, and paintings. Existing temporary hut-style structures will be replaced with permanent constructions designed to maintain the village-like feel of the space.
Official Statement
Additional Director General of JKK, Anuradha Gogiya, said, “The renovation work announced in the 2026-27 budget has started, and the design and implementation agency have already been finalised. The present hut-like structures will be converted into permanent buildings while keeping the rural character intact. The aim is to develop Shilpgram into a permanent arts and crafts centre where artists can showcase and sell their work throughout the year.”
This redevelopment is expected to boost tourism and provide a sustainable platform for local artisans, preserving Rajasthan's rich cultural heritage for generations to come.
