Hyderabad Flower Markets Experience Pre-Valentine's Day Frenzy
Flower markets across Hyderabad are witnessing a significant surge in activity as Valentine's Day approaches, with roses leading the charge in sales and experiencing sharp price increases. From the early hours, wholesale yards and retail outlets have been bustling with customers queuing up to select the perfect bouquets for February 14th.
Imported Flowers Dominate the Market
Traders report that Hyderabad's markets are heavily stocked with flowers transported from Bengaluru, parts of Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra to meet the seasonal spike in demand. While locally grown varieties are available, outside produce dominates due to its superior quality, brighter colors, and longer shelf life of four to five days.
At the Monda Market, retailer P Ramanna highlighted the popularity of premium roses, stating, "Customers are specifically asking for fresh, long-stem roses in red, pink, and yellow. The flowers coming from outside are brighter and last longer, which is why they are preferred." Bulk buyers, including event planners and gift shop owners, have also increased their purchases significantly.
Rising Footfall and Prices
Vendors at the Mehdipatnam flower market noted a sharp rise in footfall over the past two days. S Vishnumurthy, a flower vendor, observed, "The market has been crowded with youngsters, couples, and shopkeepers stocking up in advance. Business this year appears stronger than in previous seasons." With demand peaking, prices have risen noticeably.
A bunch of 20 roses, typically priced between Rs 200 and Rs 250, is now selling for Rs 300 to Rs 350, depending on quality and color. In some areas, rates have even touched Rs 400 per bunch. Traders anticipate that prices will remain firm or edge higher on Valentine's Day itself.
Economic Impact and Local Alternatives
Mohd Abdul, a wholesaler in Mehdipatnam, explained the economic significance of this period, saying, "Valentine's Day gives us one of the highest turnovers of the year. Even though prices rise due to demand and transport costs, customers are willing to spend more on quality flowers. Days like these help us recover losses from dull periods."
Meanwhile, some sellers continue to offer affordable, locally grown flowers sourced from Shamshabad and Shankarpally. Mohammed Faizan, a seller in Begumpet, noted, "Not everyone looks for premium roses. Many customers prefer budget-friendly options for simple gifting. Local flowers are fresher and reasonably priced, providing a viable alternative."
The overall market dynamics reflect a robust demand for flowers in Hyderabad, driven by Valentine's Day celebrations, with both imported and local varieties catering to diverse consumer preferences.
