Gujarat Government Announces Major Tourism Push for 2026 with Rs 3,090 Crore Budget
The Gujarat government has officially declared 2026 as the 'Gujarat Tourism Year', unveiling a substantial budget allocation of Rs 3,090 crore dedicated to tourism, pilgrim centers, and civil aviation initiatives. This strategic move aims to elevate the state's profile as a premier travel destination, with a particular emphasis on enhancing key religious and cultural sites.
Focus on Somnath and Ambaji as Global Pilgrim Hubs
Under the visionary 'One State: One Global Destination' plan, the state has proposed Rs 20 crore specifically for developing the Somnath temple into a world-class destination. This includes organizing the Somnath Swabhiman Parva to celebrate its heritage. Additionally, the Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board has been allocated Rs 550 crore for pilgrimage site development, with Rs 300 crore earmarked for improving facilities at the Ambaji Yatra Dham. A further Rs 20 crore is provided for amenities at Ambaji and other major shrines, as well as for events like the Mahashivratri fair at Girnar and the Maa Narmada Parikrama.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Enhancements
To strengthen connectivity between key destinations, the budget includes an additional Rs 3,000 crore for the Namo Shakti and Somnath-Dwarka Expressway projects, which will facilitate smoother travel for pilgrims and tourists. In terms of aviation, the government has allocated Rs 95 crore for a greenfield airport at Dahod and the expansion of airports at Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Surat, Vadodara, and Ankleshwar. Moreover, Rs 78 crore is proposed under a Viability Gap Funding scheme to improve regional air links, complemented by Rs 20 crore under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (UDAN).
Boosting Eco-Tourism and Local Attractions
The tourism push extends beyond pilgrim centers, with Rs 20 crore allocated for eco-tourism, marine tourism, and island development. Additionally, Rs 60 crore is designated to promote local tourism in the Visavadar-Porbandar region. Upgrades are also planned for Somnath and Shivrajpur beaches to enhance visitor amenities and experiences.
Record Tourist Visits and Future Prospects
According to the budget, Gujarat recorded over 22 crore tourist visits in 2025-26, highlighting the state's growing appeal. This comprehensive budget initiative is expected to further boost these numbers by improving infrastructure, promoting sustainable tourism, and positioning Gujarat as a top choice for both domestic and international travelers in the coming years.
