Boat Rides Make a Comeback at Thatipudi Reservoir After Seven-Year Suspension

In a significant boost to tourism, boat rides have officially returned to the Thatipudi Reservoir in Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh, marking the end of a seven-year hiatus. The service was relaunched following rigorous safety measures and government approvals, with a seven-seater speed boat now operational for visitors.

Safety First: A Response to Past Tragedy

The suspension of boat rides dates back to 2018, when a devastating accident occurred on the Godavari River at Devipatnam near Rajahmundry. In that incident, a boat capsized, resulting in the tragic loss of 15 lives. In response, the government implemented strict safety protocols across all tourist locations operating boats, including Thatipudi Reservoir, where three speed boats were grounded as a precautionary measure.

Forest officials have since worked diligently to secure the necessary permissions to restart the service, ensuring compliance with enhanced safety standards to prevent such mishaps in the future.

Expansion and Renovation Plans Underway

To further attract tourists and enhance the visitor experience, the Vizianagaram forest department is undertaking several initiatives. Currently, permission is pending for two additional 12-seater boats, which would significantly increase the capacity for boat rides. Additionally, all 10 cottages at the reservoir are being renovated to provide better amenities and comfort for tourists.

According to Forest Range Officer Birlangi Ram Naresh, the boat ride service is set to be fully relaunched by the end of this month. He stated, "We have two more speed boats, and shortly, engines will also be fixed. We took up the renovation of cottages for the convenience of the tourists." This comprehensive approach aims to make Thatipudi Reservoir a premier destination for both leisure and adventure.

Historical and Economic Significance of Thatipudi Reservoir

Thatipudi Reservoir, constructed between 1963 and 1968 on the River Gosthani in Vizianagaram, holds immense importance beyond tourism. It serves as a major water supply source for Greater Visakhapatnam and irrigates over 15,000 acres of farmland, supporting the local agricultural economy. The reservoir's dual role as a utility and tourist spot underscores its value to the region.

The return of boat rides is expected to revitalize the local tourism sector, drawing visitors to enjoy the scenic beauty and recreational activities. With ongoing renovations and planned expansions, Thatipudi Reservoir is poised to become a key attraction in Andhra Pradesh, balancing safety with enjoyment for all.
