US Embassy Hosts Great American Cook-Off in Delhi, Celebrates Culinary Fusion
Great American Cook-Off in Delhi Celebrates US-India Ties

In a vibrant celebration marking the start of the holiday season, the US Embassy in New Delhi, in collaboration with the US Department of Agriculture, recently organised the Great American Cook-Off. The event was a festive tribute to the joy of cooking and the unifying power of food, bringing together professional expertise and home-grown talent.

Masterclass and a Philosophy of Food Without Borders

The culinary gathering was elevated by a masterclass conducted by renowned celebrity chef Ajay Chopra. He demonstrated the art of cooking the perfect duck, filling the air with enticing aromas. The event showcased a range of high-quality American agricultural products, including Georgia pecans, California pistachios and almonds, Washington Apples, and Wisconsin cranberries.

Chef Chopra prepared a dish of duck breast with a cranberry and orange sauce, served alongside asparagus and a sweet potato galette. He used the platform to share his culinary philosophy, challenging the notion of restrictive nationalism in kitchens. "A notion that people believe in is that they will only use Indian ingredients. I believe in cooking without borders, in my cuisine, and also in my ingredients. We should not become political when we’re talking about food," he stated emphatically.

The Fusion Battle and Judging Panel

The core of the event was a competitive cook-off where four talented home chefs battled to create the best fusion dish. Their creations were judged by a panel comprising Chef Ajay Chopra and US Embassy officials Christopher Elms, Kathryn Fiedler, and Genessa Giorgi.

The contestants presented innovative flavour combinations that beautifully married Indian culinary traditions with American ingredients. The standout dishes included:

  • Pecan pulao with turkey
  • Chickpea kebab with walnuts
  • Saffron pulao with maple syrup

Food as a Diplomatic Connector

Christopher Elms, spokesperson for the US Embassy, highlighted the deeper significance of the event. "Food absolutely connects us. And I think that's one great thing about the trade relationship that we have," he said. He pointed to the growing agricultural exports from the United States to India as a tangible link between the people of both nations.

"We're looking at the endless possibilities of celebrating together, where we create and celebrate, not just our food, but the warm spirit that defines the US-India relations," Elms added, framing the cook-off as a celebration of bilateral ties.

The top honour of the day was claimed by Mallikaa, a creator of online food content. Her winning dish was a pecan pulao with cranberry glazed turkey and pistachio butter cream, a creation so delightful it reportedly had the judges licking their fingers. The event successfully demonstrated that culinary creativity, much like diplomacy, thrives on exchange, fusion, and a shared appreciation for quality.
