Uttar Pradesh's 'Temple Economy' Emerges as Major Tourism and Employment Driver

Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh announced on Monday that the state's burgeoning 'temple economy' has become a significant engine for tourism, job creation, and local livelihoods. This growth is supported by rapid infrastructure development at key pilgrimage centers and unprecedented visitor numbers during events like the Braj Rangotsav 2026.

Minister Highlights Transformation from Past to Present

Minister Singh emphasized the state's progress over the past eight and a half years, contrasting it with previous administrations. 'Earlier governments invested their politics in graveyard boundaries. Today, Uttar Pradesh is a temple economy where festivals, faith, and culture are powering tourism, employment, and local livelihoods,' he stated. His comments coincided with the Braj Rangotsav 2026, which attracted massive crowds during the Holi period.

Record-Breaking Footfall and Festival Highlights

During the Braj Rangotsav, over 4.4 million visitors flocked to the Braj region, which includes Mathura, Vrindavan, and surrounding villages. The festival calendar featured traditional events such as:

  • Lathmar Holi
  • Phoolon ki Holi
  • Huranga
  • Temple celebrations across the area

Officials reported that the festivities drew international tourists from countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Brazil, showcasing global appeal.

Steady Growth in Pilgrimage Numbers

Data released by authorities reveals a consistent increase in footfall over the years. Visitor numbers during the Rangotsav period have surged from 1.99 million in 2016 to over 5.4 million in 2025. Mathura, the heart of the Braj region, has emerged as one of India's busiest pilgrimage destinations, with visitor counts rising sharply:

  1. 2022: 65.3 million visitors
  2. 2023: 77.9 million visitors
  3. 2024: 90 million visitors
  4. 2025: 102.4 million visitors

This represents a nearly 57% growth over three years, highlighting the region's escalating popularity.

Infrastructure Development to Support Tourism Surge

To accommodate the growing influx of pilgrims, the Uttar Pradesh Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad has approved development projects worth nearly Rs 300 crore. Key initiatives include:

  • An 11.8-kilometer four-lane road connecting Mathura and Vrindavan
  • Proposals for a pod rapid transit system to enhance mobility

Since its establishment in 2017, the parishad has overseen various improvements, such as road widening, restoration of historic kunds and ghats, and the installation of lighting and parking facilities.

Economic Impact on Local Communities

The tourism surge is significantly boosting local economies. Officials noted positive effects on:

  • Hotels and homestays
  • Transport services
  • Restaurants
  • Cottage industries, including tulsi mala manufacturing in Jait village near Mathura

Additionally, the Temple Circuit linking Mathura, Ayodhya, and Varanasi has contributed to a more than 300% increase in tourism revenue in recent years, further solidifying the state's economic gains from religious tourism.
