Ugadi Ushers in Telugu New Year with Spiritual and Cultural Zeal

The vibrant festival of Ugadi, marking the commencement of the Telugu new year, was celebrated with immense cultural fervor and spiritual enthusiasm across Andhra Pradesh on Thursday. Devotees thronged temples in large numbers, offering special prayers and participating in traditional rituals to welcome the auspicious beginning.

Panchanga Sravanam and Temple Celebrations

A key highlight of the celebrations was the Panchanga Sravanam, the ritualistic reading of the new year's almanac. This ceremony was conducted in temples statewide, where devotees gathered eagerly to listen to astrological predictions and guidance for the year ahead, seeking blessings for prosperity and well-being.

In Tirumala, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Vedic scholars performed Panchanga Shravanam at the Garuda mandapam within the sanctum sanctorum. The presiding deity and processional deities were adorned with new pattu vastrams (silk robes), adding to the sanctity of the occasion.

Festive Spirit in Homes and Communities

Beyond the temples, the festive spirit permeated households with equal vibrancy. Families prepared the iconic Ugadi pachadi, a symbolic dish representing the different flavors of life—sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. Traditional delicacies such as:

  • Poornalu (sweet lentil dumplings)
  • Garelu (savory lentil doughnuts)
  • Pulihora (tamarind rice)

were cooked in abundance, filling homes with festive aromas and joy, reinforcing cultural bonds and culinary heritage.

Vasanta Navaratri Commences at Kanaka Durga Temple

Simultaneously, the nine-day Vasanta Navaratri festival began on a grand note at the renowned Kanaka Durga temple. Each day during Navaratri, the presiding deity, Goddess Kanaka Durga, will be adorned with different flowers and alankarams (ornamental decorations), attracting devotees for special prayers and darshan.

State Officials Formally Invited for Festivals

In a significant development, a contingent of priests led by TTD additional EO Ch Venkaiah Chowdary met Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu at his Undavalli residence. They extended prasadams and rendered Vedasirvachanam, formally inviting him to attend the annual Brahmotsavams at the Vontimitta Kodandarama Swamy temple.

This festival is celebrated as a state festival, and the Chief Minister is expected to offer pattu vastrams on behalf of the government on March 27. Additionally, Governor S Abdul Nazeer was also formally invited for the Vontimitta Brahmotsavams, highlighting the state's involvement in religious and cultural events.

The Ugadi celebrations thus seamlessly blended spiritual rituals, familial traditions, and official engagements, creating a holistic and joyous atmosphere for the Telugu new year.
